Senator Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central congressman, has spoken out against the activities of some parties and persons pushing the sit-at-home in the country’s southeast.

According to the former congressman, sit-ins are a lawful and nonviolent method of public protest.

Senator Sani recounted using the same tactic to urge specific demands during the military administration, which resulted in their arrest and confinement.

He did, however, point out that public cooperation to a sit-in should come from a willing place, rather than the use of force or violence, as is currently occurring in the southeast.

According to Sani, when force and violence are used to gain a complaint in a sit-at-home approach, there is something wrong with the cause or struggle.

Taking to his Twitter account, he wrote: “Sit at home is a legitimate and non-violent means of public protest. We adopted that strategy during the years of our struggle against military dictatorship, under our group called the Campaign for Democracy. The masses complied in solidarity. Even when some of us were arrested and jailed, there was compliance.”

“If you have to use force or violence for people to comply, as it’s now done in the South East, there’s something wrong with your cause or struggle.”
