According to Army Colonel Amadou Abdramane, one of the coup’s organizers, the authorization was signed by interim prime minister Hassoumi Massoudou of Niger, according to Reuters.

No one could get in touch with Massoudou for comment.

Leaders from around the world, notably France, have denounced the coup and pushed for Bazoum’s reinstatement, but they have not yet signaled any plan to intervene militarily. According to Reuters, neither Paris nor demands for comment were quickly answered.

Bazoum has been imprisoned in the presidential palace since last Wednesday. The military junta has repeatedly warned against attempts by foreign nations to free him, claiming that doing so would cause murder and chaos.

ECOWAS, which is led by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, has been cautioned by the Republic of Guinea against any planned sanctions and military involvement against the military dictatorship in the Republic of Niger.

In a statement expressing its solidarity with the Niger Republic, Guinea issued the warning, stating that it would not take part in actions against Niger and that sanctions against the military government there, including military intervention, are an option that cannot be a solution to the current issue but would instead result in a humanitarian catastrophe with potential spillover effects beyond the borders of Niger.
