The political breach between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, has grown since Shaibu filed a lawsuit seeking protection from Obaseki in order to escape being impeached and forced out of office.

The court appeal tries to shield Shaibu from future political blowback and maintain his position as the deputy governor of Edo State, despite the fact that in a June 2023 article Shaibu said he was not at odds with Obaseki.

The appellant requests an order of interlocutory injunction to prevent the respondents or their agents from harassing, intimidating, embarrassing, or preventing the applicant from performing the duties of his office as deputy governor of Edo State, including attending State Executive Council meetings and other duties, pending the outcome of the substantive suit. The motion was brought before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and on Thursday.

A source further said that the Governor summoned all PDP members of the Edo State House of Assembly to his residence a few days after the Abuja viral video, but left out his deputy, which was highly unusual.

After receiving information about the meeting, the constable headed straight towards the governor’s residence. However, he was stopped by agents from the Department of State Services, who informed him that he was not included on their list of invitees.

The Chief Judge of Edo State, the Governor of Edo State, the Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, and the Inspector General of Police of the Department of State Services were all named as defendants in the court document.
