The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leadership has been forewarned by former vice president Atiku Abubakar against using the military to reestablish democratic order in the Niger Republic.

In a statement he personally signed on Thursday in Abuja, Atiku reiterated that the Niger problem called for further diplomatic efforts.

He claimed that the West African region had become tense as a result of the military action in Niger, drawing attention from abroad to Nigeria, which is Niger’s neighbour.

Atiku said, “Of course, the world expects Nigeria to take up leadership in ensuring that the crisis of political leadership in the Republic of Niger is not just curtailed but also ensuring the restoration of democratic governance in that country.

“As the ECOWAS continues to work towards reinstating democracy in the Republic of Niger, it must be reinforced that the regional body should not travel the road of military hostilities that may exacerbate the situation.

“The crisis in the Republic of Niger requires diplomatic engagement, and that must mean that the channels for dialogue should be well sustained.”

The political unrest in Niger began on July 28 when General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the nation’s presidential guard, overthrew President Mohammed Bazoum and proclaimed himself the nation’s leader.

Under the new leadership of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, ECOWAS has pledged to take tough action against the coup plotters and imposed severe penalties on the Republic of Niger.

But nations like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea have recently sided with the Niger military junta and issued statements cautioning against using force.
