Burkina Faso Military Govt Suspends Radio Station For Criticising Niger Coup

The junta-run government of Burkina Faso stopped Radio Omega on Thursday after a broadcast of an interview that was deemed to be “insulting” to the country’s new military rulers in Niger.

Alpha Barry, a journalist and former foreign minister, owns the channel and is a member of the Omega media conglomerate.

The instant suspension was made public “until further notice,” according to Communications Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, who claimed it was “in the higher interests of the nation.”

Ousmane Abdoul Moumouni, a representative of a fresh Nigerien movement seeking to restore President Mohamed Bazoum to power following a coup on July 26, was interviewed.

In opposition to the military junta that took control on July 26, Anaedoonline.ng had earlier reported that Rhissa Ag Boula, a former rebel leader and politician, founded the Council of Resistance for the Republic (CRR).

The CRR wants to free President Bazoum, who is currently in custody.

In response to the interview, Ouedraogo criticised Moumouni’s “insulting comments” and claimed that his group was “clearly campaigning for violence and war” in an effort to “by any means” bring back Bazoum.

Shots Fired Close To President Of Burkina Faso

After two military takeovers in 2021, Burkina Faso immediately sided with Niger’s new government and even issued a warning against using force to restore Bazoum.

As a result of escalating hostilities between the government and the press in recent months, the authorities have also suspended a number of French media outlets.
