On Thursday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) expressed its disappointment with the federal government’s decision to dissolve the governing councils of the nation’s universities.

The union criticised the decision to dissolve the university’s governing councils before they had finished their terms in office and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider.

The observation was made by the National Vice Chairman of ASUU, Comrade Christopher Piwuna, of the University of Jos, in a paper he delivered at an event honouring retiring lecturers at the Joseph Sarwuaan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), in Benue State.

According to Piwuna, it is improper to dissolve governing councils and transfer their authority to the Federal Ministry of Education or the National Universities Commission (NUC) without first following the appropriate procedures set forth in the applicable university legislation.

He reiterated, “It is also a disservice to the universities to allow a vacuum because mischievous vice chancellors and ministry officials could connive to ruin our universities if such brazen disregard for the laws establishing the universities is not checked.”
