Soludo, Otti, Others Get Fresh Appointment As Details Of NEC Meeting Emerges

The National Economic Council (NEC) established an Ad-hoc Committee to interact with labour union leaders in an effort to establish a venue for discussion towards resolving issues regarding the elimination of petrol subsidies across the States.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the decision was made at the 135th meeting of the NEC, which was held on Thursday in Abuja and presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, Hope Uzodinma, the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, and Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, make up the committee.

The Vice President noted during the meeting that the committee will communicate with the country’s trade union leadership to find a way forward on the emerging issues in the interest of the nation.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were praised for their interventions. The Council also received updates on the ongoing distribution of rice, grains, fertiliser, and other items to States and N5 billion in financial support from the Federal Government.

NEC took notice of the numerous state government initiatives and advised them to scale up the delivery of palliatives in order to lessen suffering among the populace, particularly among the most vulnerable sections.

The council also expressed its sorrow at the passing of certain military personnel in Niger State and observed a minute of silence in their memory. It also expressed its sympathies to their families.

PRESENTATION OF PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF IMPACT OF FLOOD DISASTER ACROSS THE STATES IN NIGERIA BY GOVERNOR OF KOGI STATE

The Governor at the 128th NEC Meeting held on 20th October, 2022, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum and Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, drew attention of Council to the devastating effect of the 2022 flooding which affected about 31 States of the Federation that had resulted in the loss of over 600 lives, displacement of millions of people, destruction of hundreds of thousands of houses and submersion of thousands of hectares of farmlands and appealed for urgent intervention from the Federal Government to address the impact of the menace on the people and infrastructure.

Consequently, Council resolved to setup a 5-man Ad-hoc Committee on flooding comprising of Governors of Jigawa, Kogi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Lagos and Yobe State. The following were also coopted into the Committee:

The Committee’s mandate said that it was to “review the nation’s current flooding situation and design a template for victim compensation.”

The Committee met for the first time on November 10, 2022, in the Secretariat of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). The following were the Meeting’s high points:

The committee agreed that the task needed to be completed quickly in order to present a draught report at the upcoming NEC Meeting.

According to report, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Wale Edun as his minister of finance on Wednesday. He also named Atiku Bagudu as his minister of the budget and economic planning and Abubakar Kyari as his minister of agriculture and food security, among others.
