Six Presidents-General of communities in Anambra State, according to the Anambra State Association of Town Union (ASATU), were recently assassinated in cold blood.

Attorney and ASATU National President Titus Akpudo made this statement during a news conference on Thursday in Awka, the capital of Anambra State.

Akpu was responding to an assault on Ifetedunu President-General (PG) Uchenna Nwoye by some irate members of his community, who were allegedly led by Chief Vincent Udobi.

He declared that ASATU would no longer stand by and watch as its members were slaughtered and humiliated for no apparent reason other than the fact that they were leaders in their communities.

The ASATU president urged on the appropriate authorities who had been petitioned over the Ifitedunu incident to accelerate actions on inquiry and punish those found guilty to serve as a deterrent to others. The PG was attacked and injured in public.

He said,” Ifitedunu town union PG is our member. It’s our duty to protect him. It’s our duty to protect our members. That’s what will give them the freedom to operate freely. One needs to do his job without fear of molestation. We have had experience were PGs were killed, beaten, molested in many communities.

“The Ifitedunu PG was beaten publicly. He is a family man; how will his children and wife feel watching the video? If nothing is done about this, people will be reluctant to offer leadership to communities.

Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, the state commissioner for local government, chieftaincy, and community affairs, received a vote of confidence from Akpudo.

In response to Chief Uchenna Nwoye’s reinstatement and recognition as the PG of Ifitedunu, Udobi had demanded that Nwabunwanne be fired.

He said, “Governor Soludo should take special interest in Ifitedunu by sacking Nwabunwanne for return of lasting peace which the people are truly craved for.”

However, the ASATU National President, who praised the Commissioner’s accomplishments, said that most villages in the state were now peaceful and at peace thanks to the Commissioner.
