Due to a five-floor building’s violation of construction regulations, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has started to demolish it at 7 BreadFruit Street in Lagos Island.

The admission was made in a statement released on Monday in Lagos by the general manager of the LASBCA, Mr. Gbolahan Oki.

The remark was made by Mrs. Adetayo Akitoye-Asagba, Assistant Director of Public Affairs of LASBCA.

Oki explained that the destruction was a part of efforts to lessen the number of unauthorized structures being built, to lessen the threat of building collapses, and to avoid hazard.

According to him, the building’s owner failed to acquire any official approval, which is against the terms of the law that govern construction projects throughout the state.

He added that warnings and notices served on the developer to stop work were ignored.

According to him, from records, a request for development permit by the developer was rejected because the area was on government land under the supervision of Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency.

The general manager said that the agency would not rest on its oars until building construction protocols were fully observed by all relevant stakeholders to ensure safety of lives and property of residents.

He assured Lagos residents of the agency’s commitment to ensuring that all new buildings across the state were certified fit for habitation.

He appealed to property owners and developers to always build in accordance with the state’s building codes.
