The Anambra State Government has issued a warning against fraudulent and deceptive publications that could lead to misunderstandings or involve the government in disputes with state politicians.

The warning was issued by the State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, in response to a report that claimed Senator Tony Nwoye, who represents the Anambra North Senatorial District, was planning to light up Aguleri, a community that the State Government had already decorated with thousands of solar-powered street lights.

Recall that the Ogene Media Team (OMT) Channel, a new blog, is responsible for a report that claims Senator Tony Nwoye has donated four solar streetlights as the first batch of the streetlights with which he will illuminate Aguleri community. This report sparked rumours that Senator Nwoye might be trying to claim both the completed and ongoing streetlight installation by the State Government in the community;

A lot of people questioned how a senator could install only four streetlights in a community as a Constituency project after reading the poorly written publication’s claims that Senator Nwoye’s allegedly donated four streetlights were the fruits of democracy brought home and a fulfilment of the senator’s campaign promise to the people.

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, interviewed Senator Nwoye and Commissioner Chukwuemeka in response to the rumours and conjecture that followed the publication in order to learn the truth and the details of the report as well as the impression that led to its release.

When approached, Senator Nwoye vehemently denied ever providing the Aguleri neighbourhood with lamps. He made it clear that the four streetlights he just provided were not a community gift but rather a private gift to a friend from Aguleri who had asked him to help install just two spotlights in a particular location that required sufficient nighttime illumination.

The Senator, however, expressed surprise at the unfavourable media coverage of his thoughtful act. Senator Nwoye said he thought it sad that the matter had developed into a scandalous story casting doubt on his intentions, despite the fact that he freely distributed the streetlights as an individual rather than necessarily as a senator or government official.

He also emphasised that, even though he did not hold any official positions, he had a solid history of supporting community development. He recalled that between the time he left the House of Representatives and the time he was elected a senator, he gave about 100 streetlights to various towns in Anambra State. In light of his recent gesture, he questioned the reasoning behind the media’s charges and attacks against him.

Senator Nwoye rejected the claim that he had pledged to light up Aguleri, calling it untrue. He argued that it was ludicrous to believe that just four streetlights could enlighten an entire neighbourhood, while also speculating as to what the sponsors or masterminding such erroneous accusations and tissues of lies against him.

However, in his own response, the State’s Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Chukwuemeka, expressed concern over the rising number of false, inflammatory, and misleading publications in the media today and urged readers to be cautious about what they spread and take in.

He observed that the rumours that followed the claimed attempt by Senator Nwoye to light up Aguleri, which has already been lit up by the state government, may be mistaken for an effort to steal the spotlight from the government or to cast doubt on the efforts of the government.

The Commissioner harshly admonished individuals in charge of sponsoring or disseminating false and misleading material to stop their actions while emphasising the potential harm such baseless publications could do to the relationship between the state government and public figures.

The State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, had envisioned Anambra as a thriving and livable country, and he further promised that the current administration in the State was dedicated to promoting that vision.
