The plea agreement between the Bola Tinubu administration and suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele is apparently being pushed by James Ibori, a former governor of Delta State.

The suspended CBN boss and his co-accused, Saadat Yaro, reportedly chose a plea bargain to settle with the Federal Government, which resulted in an indefinite shift in their arraignment in court, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

Remember that the accused were charged by the federal government with 20 counts totaling N6.9 billion for allegedly breaking procurement laws and contract inflation.

The court’s cause list did not, however, contain the arraignment that a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory had set for Wednesday. In the same way, Emefiele and Yaro were not in court neither was any unusual security presence observed around the court premises.

According to information obtained, the jailed CBN Governor requested that the arraignment be postponed so that all parties may negotiate a plea deal.

Additionally, the two brothers of Emefiele who had sued the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for violating their fundamental rights reportedly withdrew their lawsuit after negotiating a plea deal.

SaharaReporters claims that Ibori, a supporter of President Tinubu, is currently working behind the scenes to help Emefiele negotiate a deal to admit guilt to less counts and be freed.

On Thursday, a source told the newsmen that Ibori was setting up the suspended top executive to forfeit an unfinished Abuja building and pay a N10 million punishment.

“The plea bargain scam between the FG and Emefiele is being arranged by Ibori. He is arranging for Emefiele to plead to lesser charges and get released. He is arranging for him to forfeit an incomplete building in Abuja and pay a fine of N10 million,” the sources said.
