Hannatu Musawa, the recently appointed Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, is still enrolled in the one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

The assertion was made in a statement released on Wednesday by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a civil society organisation.

After Musawa was sworn in on Monday, HURIWA alleged that she was still a member of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet even though she was a serving corps member.

According to the agency, Musawa abandoned her NYSC in Ebonyi State years ago but later expressed interest in finishing it.

Prior to President Tinubu choosing her as a candidate, the minister was mobilised once more in 2023 and posted to a legal company in Abuja, according to HURIWA.

The statement read in part: “HURIWA wondered why the correct status of Musawa wasn’t made known to the members of the public before the senate sensationally failed to screen her as it should.

“HURIWA wonders about the kind of scrutiny being conducted by the Department of State Services so much so that it wasn’t disclosed that the minister is actually a youth corper.

“She was confirmed by the senate without proper screening and sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Minister of Arts.”

Therefore, the rights organisation requested that the NYSC management force Musawa to prioritise her national youth service and renounce her ministerial post.
