In order to enforce the state’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, the Lagos State Government, headed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a directive ordering the arrest of some vehicle owners.

Abdulhafiz Toriola, the permanent secretary of the ministry of transportation, told reporters on Sunday that a directive had been issued ordering the arrest of drivers with damaged licence plates and those without any plates at all.

He bemoaned the state’s widespread use of number plates improperly.

He noted that, according to Section 16 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, a vehicle without a number can be used to commit crimes that may never be tracked.

He said: “The purpose of using number plate is for proper identification and security as it is personalised for each vehicle.

“The law enforcement agencies have been mandated to apprehend defaulters. I urge vehicle owners to comply with the State Government to strengthen the security architecture already put in place.”
