President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has received praise from Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, for his gutsy decision to withdraw gasoline subsidies.

Recall that during his inaugural speech on May 29 at Eagle Square in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu abolished the subsidy.

The president has previously stated that money earmarked for subsidies would instead be used for other initiatives that would significantly enhance the lives of millions of Nigerians, such as public infrastructure, education, health care, and employment.

He said, ” It’s high time the country woke up to the reality that it is a poor country and begin to live within her means”, adding that starting from those in leadership there was need to begin to live and demonstrate to the people that Nigeria is a poor country.

He reiterated that the current administration’s plan to mitigate the effects was comprehensive and included both short-term and long-term actions, stating that the reality of the subsidy reduction affected everyone and not only federal servants.

The governor promised that his administration would hire additional teachers and keep providing citizens with affordable, high-quality education.

The theme of the NUT’s 9th (7th Quadrennial) Delegates Conference was “Petrol Subsidy Removal: Its Impact on the Teacher and Learner, and the Way Forward.”

Speaking, Mrs. Nonye Chibueze, the State Chairman of NUT, praised the governor’s initiatives in the field of education.

She claimed that even though the government had hired 5000 teachers, the state’s nursery and primary schools lacked sufficient staff, and she urged further hiring in that area.
