The Nigerian Police Force’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command has responded to the disorderly incident involving a Department of State Services (DSS) officer that occurred on Thursday in Abuja’s Garki market.

According to information obtained by Anaedoonline.ng, DSS agents rushed the market to make an arrest after an argument between a customer and a vendor turned heated.

The vendors and other shoppers at the market were seen running for cover when the loud sound of a gunshot was heard, and it was claimed that one person was hurt, according to a video of the incident that became widely circulated online.

Haruna Garba, the FCT’s Commissioner of Police, responded to the development by saying the command has since douse down the chaotic situation at the Garki market that could have potentially disrupted the peace of the neighbourhood.

He claimed that a fight broke out between market patrons and a few others, including a DSS agent and a tailor by the name of Muhammad Habibu.

Garba verified that during the incident yesterday, shots were fired at a different tailor named Mubarak Mubarak, and damage was done to a portion of the market’s police station.

He said that the disturbance’s weapons had been found and that things had returned to normal.

The FCT commissioner also urged market patrons to avoid messing with public property, especially that which is owned by the security organisations set up to protect their safety.

If found guilty, Afunanya promised that standard disciplinary actions would be taken against its staff members who were allegedly involved in the incident. Details of the inquiry will be made public as soon as feasible, the company promised.

“The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to an incident that occurred a few hours ago (today, 7/9/2023) between its staff and a mob at the Garki Market, Abuja. Information at the disposal of the Service was that its FCT Command responded to an SOS from their field operatives who allegedly came under a mob attack in the said market.

“Consequently, the Service has commenced an investigation into the matter. The public is assured that details of the inquiries will be communicated as soon as possible. The Service assures that it will not hesitate to mete out proper disciplinary measure(s) to its staff if found culpable or running foul of Standard Operating Procedures on dealing with a member of the public,” the statement reads.
