Passengers on a United Nigeria Airlines flight, U5 0513, bound for Lagos, experienced a harrowing moment as they disembarked the aircraft following an aquaplaning incident. The plane, bearing registration 5N-BWY, encountered the aquaplaning situation upon landing at Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos, a result of heavy rainfall. Aquaplaning, also known as hydroplaning, is a phenomenon in which standing water on the surface causes the aircraft’s moving wheels to lose contact with the ground.

This occurrence led to a surge of panic among passengers, with some crying out for assistance. United Nigeria Airlines’ Head of Corporate Communications, Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu, provided insights into the incident, stating, “The aircraft, arriving from the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, initially operated and landed without issue but skidded off the runway during the landing process. Fortunately, all passengers were safely evacuated, along with their belongings, and no injuries were reported.”

The airline promptly informed the relevant authorities about the situation. Uchegbu emphasized United Nigeria Airlines’ unwavering commitment to passenger safety, asserting that the airline prioritizes the well-being of its passengers and will continuously uphold stringent safety standards to ensure passengers reach their destinations securely.
