The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has refuted rumours that a statewide strike has been called that will last indefinitely.
According to online sources, the union’s planned strike started on Friday after its deadline for the federal government passed on Thursday.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, organised labour has threatened to shut down the nation’s economy in outrage at the government’s refusal to comply with its demands.
The union is requesting from the federal government enough palliatives to lessen the effects of ending fuel subsidies.
On September 5 and 6, the NLC earlier began a two-day warning strike during which it gave a 14-day deadline.
The union continues to claim that it would shut down the economy if its demands are not satisfied, despite the government’s best efforts to stop the movement for an indefinite strike.
Online allegations that the union has started an indefinite strike went viral on Friday, while workers wait for additional instructions.
Benson Upah, the head of the NLC’s department for information and public affairs, responded to Newsmen by saying, “The report is not true.”
He urged the populace to ignore the viral report.
