The Lagos State Council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has clarified that the person allegedly arrested for administering an injection to the late singer, Mohbad, was not a registered nurse. The association made this statement in response to the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death. Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, passed away on September 12, 2023, following an injection administered by an individual described as an ‘auxiliary nurse.’

In a press release, the Lagos State Council of NANNM expressed its condolences to the late singer’s family and urged authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into his death. The association emphasized the importance of professionalism in both reporting and conducting the investigation. It noted that preliminary investigations indicated that the individual taken into custody was not a registered nurse.

NANNM emphasized the need to verify the qualifications and professional status of individuals before classifying them as healthcare professionals. In Nigeria, individuals can only be recognized as nurses after completing a five-year Bachelor of Nursing Science program at a university or undergoing training at an accredited School/College of Nursing and becoming registered and licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

The association also called for caution and accuracy in reporting during the investigation and requested media outlets that inaccurately reported the arrest of a nurse to correct their stories. Additionally, NANNM highlighted the regulatory challenges faced by Nigeria’s healthcare system, leading to unqualified individuals performing medical tasks beyond their competence.
