Professor Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate from Nigeria, made fun of former president Olusegun Obasanjo for his treatment of traditional leaders at a gathering in Iseyin, Oyo state.

The Oyo monarchs were tongue-lashed by Obasanjo for not standing to honour him and the state governor, Seyi Makinde, when they were called to the podium during the commissioning of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology’s Iseyin Campus, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

Soyinka has criticised the former president in a recent video as Obasanjo’s move has drawn widespread criticism for ‘disrespecting’ the traditional institutions and an insult to Yoruba culture.

Dr. Fidelis Enang Egbe, vice president (Southwest) of the Historical Society of Nigeria, has offered his opinions on the treatment of some Oyo traditional rulers by the late president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Egbe expressed his opinion that the former president’s action was a clear example of colonialism’s damaging effects in an interview with Daily Sun.

He argued that in pre-colonial periods, traditional monarchs were venerated and considered as paramount. The colonial overlords elevated the president and governors above the traditional leaders, therefore the situation is now the opposite.

Egbe said that while Obasanjo may have been correct in saying that the monarchs should support the governor, he was wrong to publicly insult them.
