Journalists were forbidden by Department of State Services (DSS) agents from covering the Sokoto Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s ruling.

In the courtroom at the High Court, where the verdict is being heard, the operatives who claimed to be acting on orders from above only permitted journalists from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), New Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and state-owned media.

As the winner of the election on March 18, the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Governor Ahmad Aliyu was proclaimed the victor by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Sa’idu Umar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was disgruntled and decided to go to court to request that his opponent’s victory be revoked due to suspected electoral fraud and non-qualification.

After both parties had the chance to give their final written responses, the three-judge panel presided over by Justice Haruna Mshelia reserved judgement and stated that the parties would be informed of the judgement date in September.

In his allegations that Aliyu did not match the requirements, Umar claims that the March 18 governorship race was compromised by electoral malpractice.

Sunday Martins, the Election Petitions Tribunal Secretary, stated on Tuesday that the decision in the case with the case number EPT/SK/GOV/01/2023 will be handed down on Saturday at 9 a.m. in a notice.
