Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Nigerian Minister for Petroleum Resources from 2010 to 2015, appeared in a London court Today, Monday, to face charges of receiving bribes. These bribes allegedly came in various forms, including cash, luxury goods, private jet flights, and the use of high-end properties in the UK, all in exchange for awarding oil contracts during her tenure.

This case is part of a broader effort to combat corruption within Nigeria’s political class; a problem that has long hindered the country’s development and the equitable distribution of its vast oil wealth. Alison-Madueke is the second high-profile Nigerian politician to face prosecution in the UK in recent years, following the conviction of former state governor James Ibori for fraud and money laundering in 2012.

Alison-Madueke was arrested in London in 2015 shortly after leaving her position as minister, and she was charged in August with six bribery offenses. For the past eight years, she has been on police bail, residing in the upscale St John’s Wood neighborhood in London.

During her first court appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court, Alison-Madueke provided her name, date of birth, and address but was not required to enter a plea. The charges against her are related to events alleged to have occurred in London during her time as a minister.

According to the prosecutor, Alison-Madueke is accused of accepting various advantages, including £100,000 in cash, payment of private school fees for her son, and the use and renovation of luxurious properties in London and the English countryside. Other alleged benefits include the use of a Range Rover car, payment of chauffeur-driven car bills, furniture purchases, and shopping sprees at prestigious London department store Harrods and Vincenzo Caffarella, known for selling Italian decorative arts and antiques.

While London has historically been a favored destination for affluent members of the Nigerian political elite seeking to enjoy their wealth, it is relatively rare for public figures like Alison-Madueke to face prosecution for corruption-related offenses in the UK.
