An Anambra High Court sitting in Nnewi has ordered the remand of two individuals suspected of having a role in the disappearance of Chief Obiora Agbasimelo, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2021 Anambra State election. Agbasimelo mysteriously vanished during a campaign tour in Lilu, Ihiala local government area, in the lead-up to the 2021 election, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

The two suspects, identified as Jude Chukwudi Odimegwu and Nwokolo Chukwudi Maxwell, have been accused of kidnapping Agbasimelo during his campaign tour. The Department of State Services (DSS) initially arraigned the suspects before a Magistrate court in Awka, charging them with conspiracy and kidnapping.

Following the magistrate’s order to transfer the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice, the DPP also filed the same charges against the suspects. According to the DPP, the suspects, armed with guns and other offensive weapons, allegedly abducted Obiorah Agbasimalo against his will. Subsequently, they demanded a ransom of N1 million, N5 million, and another N1 million, totaling N7 million, from his family for his release.

During the court proceeding on Tuesday, October 3, counsel to Nwokolo Maxwell was absent, leading to an adjournment of the case until October 27, 2023, by Justice C N Mbonu-Nwenyi. The judge, however, issued a stern warning, emphasizing that further undue delays in the prosecution of the case would not be tolerated. Justice Mbonu-Nwenyi noted that it was the defense, not the court, that had been causing delays in the case.
