Jonathan Leads West African Delegation To Observe Liberia Election

The West African Elders Forum (WAEF), chaired by former president Goodluck Jonathan, will be present to monitor the October 10 election in Liberia in 2023.

The former president and the group departed Nigeria on Saturday for Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, according to a statement released on Sunday by Wealth Ominabo, spokesman for the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.

He said that Kadre Ouedraogo, a former prime minister of Burkina Faso and president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is among the mission’s members.

In order to secure the “consolidation of democracy in the country, leveraging their experiences as former leaders of the sub-region,” Ominabo said the team will be present to monitor the course of the polls and offer support for free and fair elections.

President George Weah, who is running for reelection, as well as opposition leaders, the electoral management body, and the security agencies will all be met by the delegation, according to him.

Ominabo stated that during their approximately ten-day stay in Liberia, members of the WAEF delegation will visit polling places in Monrovia to watch the conduct of the election and the process of tallying the results.

He cited Ann Iyonu, Executive Director of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and Director of the WAEF Secretariat, as saying that the mission’s members would “be holding consultations with the candidates, managers of the elections, and observer missions, as well as other key stakeholders towards ensuring” a peaceful election outcome.

Ominabo noted that the delegation’s interactions with the nation would be informed by their knowledge and experience as past presidents and sub-regional leaders.
