Early on Tuesday, the Israeli military declared that it had regained complete control of the border with Gaza.

This happened after militants from Hamas broke through defences over the weekend and attacked adjacent communities, killing hundreds of Israelis.

No militants have crossed into Israel from the Gaza Strip since Monday night, but there may still be some Palestinian attackers on the move, according to Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman Richard Hecht.

Hecht claimed that 1,500 militants’ bodies had been discovered in Israeli territory thus far, and that hundreds more had been apprehended.

He, however, cautioned that the exchanges of fire that had taken place in locations near the border since Hamas’ unexpected multi-pronged assault on Israel on Saturday have still continued, NAN reports.

Conflicts have recently occurred in the villages of Sa’ad and Kissufim in the Negev desert, close to Gaza.

Israel has kept up its unrelenting airstrikes on the region in retaliation.

According to the Israeli Health Ministry, Hamas fighters have been responsible for almost 900 deaths and more than 2,600 injuries in Israel since Saturday.

Massive Israeli counterattacks, according to the Health Ministry, have left more than 3,800 people injured and at least 687 dead in the Gaza Strip.

In preparation for a potential ground assault of the heavily populated Palestinian enclave, Israel mobilised about 300,000 reserve soldiers on Monday.

“We are now concentrating on our offensive in Gaza,’’ Hecht said, adding that the military has set up what it describes as ’’infrastructure for future operations.”

“What Hamas will face will be harsh and terrible,’’ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said early on Monday evening. “We are only at the beginning.’’
