Global Efforts to Evacuate Citizens from Israel Amid Escalating Conflict
As the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas continues to escalate, governments around the world are working tirelessly to evacuate their citizens from the affected region. The violence, which erupted with a Hamas attack on Israel last Saturday, has led to devastating multiple airstrikes by the Israeli military on Gaza, resulting in widespread destruction and a tragic loss of lives on both sides.
Countries have launched and are planning operations to repatriate their citizens amid the ongoing crisis. Here’s an overview of some of the evacuation efforts:
1. Nigeria: Nigeria has airlifted more than 300 of its citizens who were on a Christian pilgrimage from Israel back home. The group had been traveling from Bethlehem to Nazareth but had to make a detour to Jordan when the conflict intensified. From Jordan, they took a chartered flight to Lagos.
2. Argentina: Argentina, home to the largest Jewish population in Latin America, has started evacuating more than 1,200 of its citizens from Israel. Three Air Force flights a day will transport them to Rome, Italy, from where they will be flown to Buenos Aires.
3. Brazil: Brazil’s government plans to mobilize at least six planes to repatriate its citizens in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Approximately 14,000 Brazilians live in Israel, with another 6,000 in the Palestinian territories. Some had already left on commercial flights.
