A recent viral post claiming that Abia State was declared the best-performing state in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been debunked by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria.

The Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosore Adesina, clarified that the claim was entirely false and that WAEC does not make such announcements. In a statement, Adesina emphasized that WAEC does not rank the performance of states in its examinations and has always made this clear.

The statement from WAEC reads, “The Council completely and totally disassociates itself from the publication. For the avoidance of doubt, The West African Examinations Council DOES NOT RANK the PERFORMANCE of STATES in its examination. This we have always stated.”

The Council also pointed out that they have not yet determined the best candidate(s) for WASSCE for School Candidates in 2023. They requested that any reports to the contrary should be disregarded.

In light of this clarification, the general public is advised to exercise caution and not believe false claims regarding the performance rankings of states in the WASSCE. WAEC Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examinations remains unwavering.
