On Wednesday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the premier Igbo sociocultural group, made a formal request to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to drop all charges against Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader.

Following the recent release of Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, often known as Igboho, from prison in the Benin Republic, Ohanaeze made the request.

Recall that on October 1st, 2023, Ohanaeze had requested Tinubu to free Kanu and the authorities of the Benin Republic to free Igboho.

Igboho was, however, freed from prison by the Beninese government last week after serving two years behind bars.

Igboho escaped Nigeria after the Department of State Services, or DSS, issued a wanted notice for him, and was captured and imprisoned in Cotonou.

However, the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, praised the unrelenting efforts of Yoruba leaders who helped secure Igboho’s release, including Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Prof. Banji Akintoye, Prof. Wole Soyinka, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Isiguzoro remarked in a statement that their efforts had not gone unappreciated. So Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed its appreciation for their commitment and tenacious pursuit of justice.

In order to achieve this, he asked Tinubu to release Kanu in the same manner as President Patrice Talon of Benin.

Isiguzoro insisted that Kanu’s release will promote peace and togetherness inside the country.

He said: “We express our satisfaction with President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic for releasing Sunday Igboho through the intervention of Yoruba leaders and political figures.

“Now, we believe it is the opportune moment for President Tinubu to follow suit and show similar gestures by dropping all charges against Nnamdi Kanu.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu will not only contribute to restoring peace in the Southeast region but also address the prevailing security challenges faced by our nation.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes that granting Kanu his freedom will foster reconciliation and promote more harmonious coexistence among different ethnic groups in Nigeria.”
