The controversial renaming of popular Abakaliki Street to Club Road in the affluent Awka Central Business District of Anambra State has been revived, causing a new conflict between Ebonyi and Anambra states. Stakeholders are appealing for a reversal to prevent retaliation.

nearly five years ago, the Willie Obiano administration officially opened Abakaliki Street, which had been around for nearly 20 years. However, they later gave in to pressure and renamed it Club Road, much to the chagrin of the residents of Abakaliki and the entire Ebonyi State.

Peter Uzor, the creator of Abakaliki Street and Patron of Ebonyians in Anambra State, explained the significance of the street name restoration to reporters. He said he arrived in Awka in 1971 to work as an apprentice carpenter and became the first person to inhabit the vast forest in 1990 when he created the access road.

Uzor noted that once the former Awka South Council accepted the registration of the Abakaliki Street on his payment of the necessary costs, he erected an eight-room flat and relocated to No. 1 Abakaliki Street.

To the disadvantage of his wife and children’s schooling for years, he said, he has not broken his promise to engage a caterpillar to maintain the street and pay the requisite yearly renewal payments.
