The appeals contesting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election victory on February 25 have been postponed by the Supreme Court.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Tinubu was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), but Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) rejected the decision and went to court.

Along with the candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the pair appealed the election results, but the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal dismissed their claims.

The three political parties appealed the PEPT ruling to the Supreme Court, which heard their case on Monday.

Although PDP and LP continued to argue their claims, APM on Monday announced the abandonment of their petition during the proceedings at the Supreme Court.

Chukwuma Majukwu Umeh, the appellant’s attorney, requested its withdrawal.

The Supreme Court rejected the appeal after the withdrawal because it lacked merit.

Members of the Supreme Court panel dismissed the appeal, stating that it was frivolous because the issue of Shettima’s legitimacy had already been settled in a previous case involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) v. INEC and others.

Nevertheless, following the arguments made by the attorneys for the PDP and LP, the 7-member panel, which is chaired by Justice John Okoro, deferred the case.

Okoro held, “This appeal is reserved for judgement until a date to be communicated to parties.”
