The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested and subjected to torture. This has angered the camp of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) nominee for president in 2023.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, NLC planned a protest rally in Owerri on Wednesday in response to the state government’s purported insensitivity to the state’s workers’ predicament.
Just before the demonstration started, he and a few union leaders were accosted by thugs who physically hurt them. He was taken to their facility by police officers immediately following the attack, where they allegedly placed him under protective custody.
UPDATE: NLC President, Joe Ajaero Arrested In Imo
The NLC leadership stated that the attack was orchestrated by the Imo government and that the state commissioner of police was in charge of it.
The NLC President was attacked and arrested, but the Imo government has denied any involvement.
The spokesman for the LP Presidential Campaign Council (LP PCC), Yunusa Tanko, responded on Thursday by writing on his official X handle, saying that the abuse of Ajaero is absolutely abhorrent.
Tanko claimed that the NLC President’s arrest and torture had reached a breaking point in terms of impunity.
He wrote: “This is our comrade, the President of the workers in Nigeria heavily and dastardly bruterlised by one Governor under the watchful eyes of the President of the country from the same political party. The level of impunity is reaching a boiling point. We say NO NO NO.”
