Tragedy Strikes as Lightning Claims Lives of Students in Anambra

In a devastating incident that sent shockwaves through the community of Okpuno in Anambra State, three male students of a private secondary school lost their lives while playing football on the school field. The tragic event occurred during a heavy rainfall accompanied by breeze and thunderstorms on a late Saturday evening.

The students had gathered on the school’s pitch to practice for an upcoming football competition when the sudden lightning struck. Eyewitnesses reported that the coach had already ended the practice session due to the impending rain, but some of the students decided to continue playing football on the field. It was during this impromptu practice that the lightning, accompanied by thunderstorms, enveloped the area, and tragedy struck.

Out of the nine students involved in the football session, six were eventually resuscitated at the school’s clinic after initially being rushed there. However, three young lives were unable to be saved, and they tragically lost their lives.

One witness recounted the harrowing scene, saying, “Lightning, accompanied by claps of thunderstorms suddenly enveloped the area, and the boys were struck in the process.” A teacher who heard the students’ screams and saw them trembling and jerking on the field raised the alarm, and help was immediately sought.

The survivors were rushed to a hospital in Awka, where parents and sympathizers gathered to await news of their condition. While two of the deceased students’ parents had taken their sons’ bodies, one remained in the mortuary.

A doctor at the hospital revealed that the impact of the lightning might have been minimized if the boys had been wearing boots while playing on the field. The tragedy highlights the importance of safety precautions in outdoor activities, particularly in the face of adverse weather conditions.

The school principal declined to comment on the incident, expressing his distress. Meanwhile, the state’s police spokesman stated that the incident had not been reported to the police, underscoring the gravity of the tragedy that has left a community in mourning and raised concerns about safety measures during adverse weather conditions.
