The aviation unions in Nigeria have initiated a complete withdrawal of workers at the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, Imo State. This decision comes in response to the brutalization of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero in the state, allegedly at the direction of Governor Hope Uzodimma. As a result, Governor Uzodimma has been declared persona non grata at all airports nationwide until further notice.

The aviation unions involved include the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP).

In a joint statement issued by the unions, they directed all aviation workers, both public and private, to withdraw all services to all Owerri flights, both inbound and outbound, from any airport in Nigeria. They also instructed aviation workers at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri to stay at home. These actions were taken in line with the directive of the joint NEC session of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

The unions expressed their concerns over the situation in Imo State and vowed to take further actions to address the matter. They urged airports’ managements, airlines operating in and out of Owerri, intending passengers, and the general public to take note of the situation.

This development could potentially disrupt travel plans for those passing through Imo State and Sam Mbakwe Airport.
