Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State was fired on Thursday by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

The March 18 governorship election, which resulted in Lawal being elected, was deemed to be inconclusive.

In a unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel of the Court invalidated and set aside Lawal’s declaration on behalf of the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP.

Following the reading of the lead judgement, Justice Sybil Nwaka Gbagiz directed that new elections be held in the Maradun Local Government Area of the State as well as in other regions where previous polls were either annulled or held without a vote.

The Court ruled that it was unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional to declare Lawal the winner of the governorship using IREV data in the absence of polling unit results.
