Nigeria’s vulnerability to its reliance on crude oil revenue has forced other sector of the economy to be less harnassed. While agriculture has been emphasised as the “messianic industry,” the tourism industry, with a makeover, has the potential to bring in a sizable amount of foreign exchange revenue. But even in these modern times, the government’s latest attempts at tourism reform appear to be stuck in the past. Tourism has developed into one of the sectors with the quickest rate of growth in the world. Increased holiday culture and travel technologies have been the main drivers of this expansion. Nigeria should be able to carve out a place for itself in the world thanks to its rich geographic features, which include mountains, coastal beaches, historical sites, wildlife, UNESCO-approved heritage sites, and a diversified culture.

In contrast to other African nations like Seychelles, Cape Verde, and Mauritius, where the travel and tourism (T&T) industry has been better tapped into, contributing 20%, 17%, and 12% of GDP respectively, travel and tourism (T&T) only accounts for about 2% of Nigeria’s GDP at the moment, according to a 2017 tourism report by the World Economic Forum. Together, these three nations brought in over two million foreign visitors in 2016, despite the fact that Nigeria only had 1.3 million arrivals.
