UPDATE: Enugu State Seals 16 Businesses Over Tax Evasion

Due to allegations of tax evasion, the Enugu State government has sealed the locations of sixteen enterprises, including lodging facilities, consultancy firms, and schools.

The State Internal Revenue Service (ES-IRS), which announced the move on Friday, claimed that the impacted companies had disregarded many government reminder letters.

According to Emmanuel Nnamani, the head of the ES-IRS, the owners and management of the enterprises neglected to abide by the tax regulations, therefore the organisation was forced to seek a court order to seal the premises. He claimed that since 2015, the companies have owed the state millions of naira in unpaid taxes.

According to Nnamani, the state’s low tax compliance rate is having an impact on the government’s capacity to offer services to the populace. He gave the recent flag-off of 71 road improvements in the state capital as an illustration of the kinds of people-focused initiatives for which the administration required funding.

He urged the populace to work with the government and pay their taxes on time, pointing out that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah had provided more than 200 percent of the services requested over the previous seven months.
