The governor of the area reports that about forty individuals are presently receiving treatment in hospitals, while those with minor injuries were taken care of on the spot.

The Mindanao city of Marawi has been the target of multiple terrorist assaults. In 2017, ISIS-affiliated terrorists occupied the city for five months, forcing a large-scale resident evacuation before the Philippine military was able to retake the area.

The Philippines, while is home to a large Muslim majority, is also home to a primarily Catholic population, especially in Mindanao.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. condemned the attack in a post on X (formerly Twitter), asserting, “Extremists who resort to violence against the innocent will always be seen as enemies to our society.” He announced the deployment of additional security forces to the region.

The world community is keeping a close eye on the growing efforts to apprehend those responsible for this horrific atrocity.
