President Bola Tinubu has been promptly informed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the massive dissatisfaction and mass resignation crises plaguing public universities.

The Union voiced concerns on Tuesday, pointing out that a number of departments and divisions in Nigeria’s public institutions are experiencing staffing shortages as a result of a sharp increase of lecturers quitting to pursue better chances abroad.

ASUU cited a number of reasons for the resignations, including insufficient funding, unpaid leave, inadequate infrastructure, and a disregard for the academic community.

In an interview with journalists, Professor Ayo Akinwole, the ASUU Chairman at the University of Ibadan, described the alarming situation of public universities.

Professor Akinwole emphasised the terrible circumstances public colleges are in, drawing attention to the obvious traces of stress and dissatisfaction on instructors’ faces.

Akinwole said: “Vice Chancellors cannot single-handedly employ to replace staff as urgent as it is needed again. They have to contact Abuja for approval, which may take six months to a year, if not more, before they get approval. By this time, the best candidate has gone to a more serious country that respects quality. Sadly, people from the Ministry of Education to legislators themselves want to dictate who the universities should employ.“
