The massive Nigerian delegation to the COP28 Climate Change Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to the Labour Party (LP), is an obvious waste of tax dollars.

Recall from Anaedoonline.ng that last week’s social media storm was sparked by the large number of Nigerian delegates attending the conference.

But in a statement issued later that week, the Presidency denied reports that it had paid for 1,411 participants to the conference, claiming instead that it had merely supported over 400 attendees.

The head of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, stated in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune that the Tinubu administration was cognizant of the predicament of Nigerians in light of the nation’s ongoing economic difficulties and widespread poverty.

According to Tanko, the Labour Party has brought up concerns about the delegation to the summit, and it is hoped that the administration would take a closer look at some of these issues.

He said: “Well, it is very appalling because one will be tempted to ask what the government has gone to Dubai with [over 400] delegates just to attend a conference that 20 or 50 people could have easily attended.

“I see it as a clear waste of public funds. We have raised issues regarding that, and we do hope the government will look at some of them.

“This is because the country is currently in dire need of money. So how can you take the money meant for the people and wastefully expend it anyhow, simply because you are in the corridor of power? It obviously won’t augur well for the country at the end of it all.”
