The governor’s proposed taxation proposals have drawn criticism from prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) member and former Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu.

The state’s native, Okechukwu, highlighted the inhabitants’ current economic struggles in a statement released on Sunday.

He draws attention to the inhumanity of subjecting the public to additional financial hardships through high taxes.

Okechukwu made the observation that many Nigerians and people living in Enugu State are already struggling to pay for necessities like food, transportation, and medical care.

Examining closely the governor’s proposed N1/2 trillion budget for the 2024 fiscal year, Okechukwu voiced concern about the idea of taking N1/4 trillion out of a town that is already extremely poor.

The multidimensional poverty rate in the state is over 40%, which raises concerns regarding the viability of such a revenue target.

In his remarks to the media at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Governor Mbah referred to the state’s budget appropriation as the “Budget of disruptive economic growth.” Okechukwu discussed this budget deeply.

He emphasised the particular poverty issues in Enugu State as well as the possible drawbacks of excessive taxes, even if he acknowledged the prevalent practice of internal revenue collection throughout the nation.

In order to access federal projects, Okechukwu advises the governor to carefully rely on the Federation Account Allocation Committee’s (FAAC) monthly revenue. He also suggests that the governor seek private sector cooperation for a 1,000 megawatt coal-fired power plant that complies with environmental regulations in order to increase investment and economic growth.

In answer to apprehensions regarding the ecological consequences of the power plant, Okechukwu cited Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) technology as a means of ameliorating the impacts of climate change.

Citing the large number of coal-fired power plants in existence, he further attacked industrialised nations for their hypocrisy.
