As a meaningful birthday present, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is now serving an extended prison sentence, has conveyed his sincere wish for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release his brother.

In an interview with Vanguard, Emmanuel expressed this sincere request, saying that the family had been through a great deal of suffering as a result of the IPOB leader’s protracted incarceration, particularly after the death of their parents three years prior.

Emmanuel, whose birthday is December 11, revealed that his brother’s ongoing suffering since his extradition to Nigeria in 2021 overshadows the happy occasion. In light of his brother’s ongoing suffering, he made it clear that nothing matters to him anymore.

Emmanuel made an appeal to President Tinubu, pleading with him to abide by several court rulings ordering Kanu’s release. He declared that his brother’s release would be the birthday present he would appreciate the most.

Kanu’s appeal against his continued imprisonment by the Department of State Services (DSS), which has been ruled to be a violation of prior court rulings, is scheduled for consideration by the Supreme Court on Friday, December 15.

Kanu was earlier exonerated of all 15 counts of treason brought against him by the federal government by the Court of Appeal.

The court denounced his kidnapping in Kenya and his extraordinary rendition to Nigeria, saying these actions went against established international norms.

As a result, the court decided that Kanu should either be transported back to his home country of the UK or repatriated to Kenya, where he was travelling at the time of his kidnapping using his British passport.

Prince Emmanuel, meanwhile, emphasised that Kanu’s release—who he claimed is wrongfully imprisoned—is his only birthday wish.

He refuted the false belief that Kanu is the root of Nigeria’s problems rather than one of the possible solutions.

Prince Emmanuel claimed that one of the most important things that might happen to bring about peace in Nigeria is to free Kanu and have a conversation with him.
