Numerous Nigerian civil society organisations have together called for Bola Tinubu to reveal his assets to the public.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL), the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), and the Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) are examples of these civil societies.

The organisations contend that the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act should provide the public access to asset records, even though the legislation may not require public officials to reveal their assets to the public.

The Chairman of HEDA, Lanre Suraj, stated that they had tried and failed to get Tinubu’s assets disclosure form via the legal system.

“Some human rights and civil society bodies had approached the court to ensure that CCB released the assets declaration form of Tinubu, we came out with nothing,” Suraj stated.

SERAP underlined how crucial it is that Tinubu lead by example by disclosing information about his holdings, income, investments, and obligations as soon as possible.

The deputy director of SERAP, Oludare, encouraged the president to promote accountability and openness by extending this disclosure to his vice and others.

Dr. Chido Onumah, the coordinator and chairman of AFRICMIL, also encouraged Tinubu to publicly reveal his assets in line with Part I, Paragraph 11 of the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution, in order to demonstrate his commitment to the real fresh start he had promised Nigerians.

Experts Warn FG Against Sale Of Public Assets

Goddy Uwazurike, a human rights attorney, voiced doubts about the National Assembly’s ability to change the constitution to require public asset disclosure. But he emphasised how important it is for Tinubu to set an example.

The CACOL Chairman, Debo Adeniran, underlined the need for civil society organisations and the media to support constitutional revisions that would force public officials to disclose their assets in a public manner.

Adeniran emphasised the difficulty of eliminating corruption in the absence of information on the financial shifts made by public servants both during and after their employment.

“That’s why corruption will be difficult to eradicate because we do not know what a public officer worth before and after their tenure. We are only talking of morality and the need for President Tinubu to lead by example and not from the aspect of what the law says,” Adeniran disclosed.
