Filming a police officer while they are on duty is perfectly acceptable, according to a clear declaration given by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
This declaration was issued in reaction to an incident in which a user named X (previously on Twitter) said that some police officers had forcibly taken his phone. The person has to pay N10,000 in order to get his phone back.
Adejobi stated, “You can video or take pictures of policemen on duty. We have said it severally. There is nothing wrong with that.”
He further encouraged the public to report such incidents. “You can take up the case. Send an SMS to me or to our email box, Pressforabuja@police.gov.ng. You can as well talk to your PPRO,” he added.
The PPRO’s statement is regarded as a critical step in assuring accountability and transparency inside the police department. It also reminds people of their rights and the appropriate avenues for reporting any kind of misconduct by law enforcement.
Many people applauded the PPRO’s statement, viewing it as a step in the right direction towards increasing public confidence in law enforcement. It is unclear, meanwhile, how this strategy will be put into practice and whether it would fundamentally alter how law enforcement conducts its business.
