President Bola Tinubu has come under fire from former presidential contender Omoyele Sowore for not indicating that he would run in the 2023 ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon.

After receiving his running uniforms and number bibs for the competition, which gets underway in Abuja on Saturday, December 16, Sowore made this statement.

There are two categories for the tournament: a half-marathon that starts in front of the ECOWAS Secretariat at 7:00 am and a 5 km fun race that starts in Bannex Plaza on Saturday at 7.30 am. Eagles Square in Abuja will host the conclusion of the two events.

Because President Tinubu is the head of ECOWAS, Omoyele Sowore urged him to set an example by taking part in any of the categories of the tournament.

Sowore applauded ECOWAS for the marathon effort, calling their embrace of fitness and the running community “the best thing anyone can do”.

He continued by saying that he was now a “better person” and that his health had greatly improved since he started running.

The activist-turned-politician continued to bemoan President Tinubu’s refusal to announce his plan to run the entertaining 5-kilometer event or the half-marathon.

“As of now, there’s no sign of his (Tinubu) bib or participation. We can’t have the ECOWAS marathon in Nigeria without the chairman of the sub-regional body participating”, Omoyele Sowore told reporters.

He said that more Nigerians would be motivated to start jogging if President Tinubu actively promoted it and ran the ECOWAS marathon, improving the nation’s health and maybe saving the government money on medical costs.

Please take note that all registrants and intended participants will get their running kits, number bibs, and goodie bags at Eagle Square.
