According to Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the congress anticipates that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would implement a new minimum wage by March 2024.

The NLC president revealed in a speech on Thursday that the current minimum wage will expire in March of this year, and labour leaders anticipate that the federal government will have finished negotiating a new wage by then.

He claims that since last year, the NLC has taken the appropriate action by submitting the names of its delegates to the government in order to form the minimum wage committee.

“The Federal Government had through a letter asked the organised labour to release our names to the new minimum wage committee to be constituted.

“Since last year, the list was submitted to the government and it is only when the committee is constituted that we now go into negotiation with the government as a union to agree on it.

“The existing minimum wage will be expiring by March this year, so it is hoped we may conclude the negotiation for a new minimum wage before March,” Ajaero told newsmen.

The head of the NLC further stated that, following the removal of gasoline subsidies, the federal government has only paid one month’s worth of the salary award announced for Nigerian workers.
