The Masallacin Eid Shop Owners and Traders Association disclosed on Thursday that over thirty of its members perished both during and after their stores at Eid Ground were destroyed.

With Governor Abba Yusuf at the helm, the Kano State government executed this measure after taking office in May 2023.

The impacted parties sued the state government, requesting N30 billion in compensation. Nonetheless, the government consented to an extrajudicial settlement, guaranteeing to pay N3bn in three installments.

Yakasai displayed a letter that was written to the commissioner of police for Kano State. The chairman of the association, Auwalu Sa’idu Umar, and its secretary, Ibrahim Salisu Nyas, signed the letter, which was dated January 3, 2024.

In violation of articles 97, 286, 308 and 326 of the Penal Code and the laws of Kano State, Nigeria, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, Dr. Abdullahi Bich, H.E. Abba Yusuf, and Muhammad Diggol were among the people named in the letter that were accused of “criminal conspiracy, theft, criminal misappropriation and mischief.”

The organisation conveyed in the letter their dismay at the illegal activities, claiming that the destruction of their property and loss of revenue had caused some of their members to die and others to become ill, including stroke victims.

They wrote, “The victims’ orphans and children are left with no parental care and attention, many are rendered homeless; poor or no education, medical care, because their breadwinners are either dead or have lost their means of livelihood.”

They calculated that the entire worth of the damaged property was N260 billion. The Federal High Court, Kano Division, had declared the destruction to be “illegal, unconstitutional, and barbaric,” and the traders urged the Commissioner of Police to look into the matter.

The letter ended with a request for a criminal investigation into the situation, with a focus on crimes against humanity and property.
