UPDATE: Two Arraigned for Alleged Foodstuffs Theft

Tuesday saw the appearance of Samson James, 28, and Jonathan Edwards, 26, before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court. They are accused of stealing N215,000 worth of food products and of engaging in criminal conspiracy.

The defendants, who are Sabon Tasha, Kaduna locals, were charged with carrying out the offence at Ungwan Boro, Kaduna, on January 4.

The prosecution, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that on the specified date, the defendants and two other people—who are still at large—had stolen food from Benita Okoro’s shop illegally.

A total of N215,000 worth of stolen goods comprised two bags of rice, five cartons of noodles, four bags of semovita, two 25-liter jugs of soybean oil, and four cartons of Maggi seasoning.

Leo clarified that the defendants, Jonathan Edwards and Samson James, were taken into custody by watchful neighbours and turned over to the police.

“During the course of the investigation, the stolen items were also recovered from them,” he stated.

He stated that the infractions were against sections 233 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017.

The accused people filed a not guilty plea to the charge.

The defendants’ bail was approved by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, who set it at N200,000 apiece. apiece of the two sureties was also ordered to post the same amount of cash.

The requirements were that the sureties have a stable source of income and reside within the court’s jurisdiction. The following hearing is set for February 2 by Emmanuel.
