The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesome Wike, has stated that the NUT chairpersons are to blame for the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in Abuja, rather than the federal government.
Since January 15, primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been on an indefinite strike in protest of not being paid their arrears and allowances.
This strike is an extension of one that was put on hold in 2023 because the problems could not be handled in the six weeks that were scheduled.

To resolve the situation, the chairpersons of the six area councils and security agencies convened an emergency meeting with the FCT Minister. He has held the chairpersons accountable for the strike’s continuation, claiming that they have failed to carry out their duties.
“Recently, the NUT has embarked on strike. It is not because of our fault. It is the council chairmen’s fault because primary schools are under the purview of the area councils.”
Additionally, he stated that since the strike was not their responsibility, the ministers were not at fault for it.
“Again, it will look as if the ministers are doing nothing, but that is not our responsibility,” he said.
Wike said that he had invited the striking teachers for a meeting to resolve the problems. He urged the chairpersons to wake up to their duties and end the strike. “Council chairmen should know that they must wake up to their responsibilities,” he said.
