Bola Ahmed Tinubu has complimented Muhammadu Buhari, his predecessor, for his attempts to resolve the security issues that have beset Nigeria for many years.

At the book launch for Femi Adesina’s book “Working With Buhari,” Tinubu made this statement. Adesina was Buhari’s media adviser from 2015 till 2023.

According to Tinubu, terrorist organisations, criminal gangs, and separatist movements have posed numerous threats to Buhari’s administration, but they had been somewhat contained.

He gave as an example of one of the situations Buhari had to deal with the 2011 attack on the United Nations building in Abuja, which was carried out by the Islamist Terrorist group Boko Haram.

“It is easy to forget that the United Nation building was attacked here in Abuja. It is easy to forget the role of arm forces, but if this book is carefully read and told in time of substance in our various homes, the job of security in every inch of our nation may not be completed, but you did a wonderful job,” Tinubu said.

However, several Nigerians have criticised and expressed scepticism over Tinubu’s praise of Buhari’s security achievements, pointing out the high rate of violence and insecurity that still exists in the nation.

Between May 29, 2015, when Buhari took office, and May 18, 2023, there were 59,279 fatalities from security-related incidents, according to statistics published by the Armed Conflict Location and Event statistics Project.

Since Tinubu became office on May 29, 2023, not much has changed for the better. 2,840 violent occurrences between January and July 2022 resulted in at least 7,222 Nigerian deaths and 3,823 kidnappings.

The ongoing insurgency by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province, in the northeast; the frequent attacks and kidnappings by armed bandits in the north-west and central regions; and the conflicts between farmers and herders over resources and land are some of the major security issues that Tinubu inherited from Buhari.

Tinubu has pledged to modernise the security industry and provide the military with increased weaponry, salary, and training. In addition, he has promised to deal with the underlying socioeconomic issues of inequality, poverty, unemployment, and corruption that contribute to insecurity.

However, considering how intricate and multidimensional the security issue is, a lot of Nigerians have doubts about Tinubu’s capacity to fulfil his pledges. Since he was a strong ally and supporter of Buhari and had previously supported his acts and policies, others have also accused him of being dishonest and hypocritical.

Several luminaries, including Senate President Ahmad Lawan and former vice president Osinbajo, attended the book launch.

The book, a memoir of Adesina’s time serving as Buhari’s spokesperson, details the successes and setbacks of the eight-year administration and provides insights into the character and style of leadership of the governor.
