Next week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to visit Nigeria, where he will discuss US government collaborations in the areas of food, environment, and security.

During his official visit, which takes place from January 21 to 26, Mr. Blinken will visit four nations: Angola, Cabo Verde, and Cote d’Ivoire. Nigeria is one of them.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the U.S. Mission in Abuja, Mr. Blinken’s visit is intended to highlight the rapid advancement of U.S.-African cooperation since the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.

Security, food, health, and climate are among the main topics. In order to increase commerce and job creation in Africa, the statement placed a strong emphasis on a future-focused economic partnership, U.S. infrastructure investments in the continent, and support for Africa’s global competitiveness.

It is anticipated of the Secretary of State to promote security alliances based on common ideals including the defence of human rights, the advancement of democracy, and the growth of the rule of law.

In addition, Mr. Blinken’s dedication to his coastal West African partners was highlighted in the statement. These included his work with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address regional issues, his support of African leadership in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and his commitment to the Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability.

Significantly, Mr. Blinken’s trip to Nigeria comes after President Joe Biden has been under growing pressure from American human rights organisations to declare the nation a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) because of the alleged killing of hundreds of Christians in recent months. Twenty-four interest organizations, including religious groups, sent a letter to Mr. Blinken urging the U.S. to designate Nigeria as a CPC.
