In the general elections of 2023, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, has called for a major cutback in the expense of government, especially at the federal level, arguing that we should give priority to important sectors like health, education, and rescuing the poor.

Obi expressed this viewpoint to journalists on Monday in Ibadan during an interactive session following his condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde at the government house following the explosion that occurred in Bodija on January 16.

“Elections are over, and governance is the key thing,” Obi said, underscoring the necessity of a post-election focus on governance and urging the federal government to take action to reduce poverty in the nation.

“It’s a matter of sacrifice; elections are over, governance is the key thing, and what is required, for me in particular, is that we need to cut the cost of governance, especially at the federal level.

“It is unacceptable the way it is going. We need to prioritize critical areas such as education, health, and pulling people out of poverty,” Obi remarked.

Given the current state of the world, Obi further urged the federal government to pay priority to important economic areas like health and education.

In addition, the former Anambra governor exhorted Nigerians to actively participate in the country’s development, stressing that everyone has a part to play in improving the nation’s fortunes.

Obi visited Governor Makinde and the people of Oyo State to offer his sympathies for the tragic Bodija explosion disaster. He praised the state administration for reacting to the incident so quickly.

Governor Makinde responded by thanking Peter Obi for his visit and stating that the inquiry to find the explosion’s masterminds was still ongoing.
